THE UNEXPECTED RINGS
In the daily life, we have stereotypical images in our mind of many things, and also in jewellery, for example we would imaging that rings must be round shape and worn on the finger. Therefore, in this project I hope to create 'traps' in the viewer's imagination through a series of designs of jewellery and objects, leading the viewer to interact with the work and rethink the boundaries of the definition of jewellery, and thus to think about the identity and meaning of jewellery. David Bielander work inspired me a lot, he used the value of materials, using gold as a precious metal created a series of cardboard textured work, to lead the viewer to think about the value of materials.
In my project, I was inspired by people's habitual way of placing and wearing jewellery in their daily life. Taking the ring and the jewellery box as the starting point, combining the blocking of the ring by the jewellery box as the core of the design, I created a series of works that look like ordinary rings, but with the blocked part of the ring as a variety of jewellery to be worn. For example, one of the work looks like a ring is actually a brooch.
I modelled the pieces in Rhino and experimented with 3d printing, using white resin for 3d printing as design development, experimenting with different sizes and designs, and plating to experiment with different surface finishes. In terms of material selection, the jewellery box is printed in resin and plated, the ring design uses silver and zirconia as the main material, retaining the polished surface of the metal.
The wearability of the works in this series is such that when they are not worn, they appear to be rings, but when they are picked up, it becomes different designs that they are not actually rings; the designs could be worn as rings, necklaces, brooches, earrings, etc. The process of the viewer interacting with the work is also part of my design concept.
